Learning, Serving, and Growing Together: Bridges Staff Gather in Nashville

Bridges staff from across the country gathered in Nashville for a week of learning, service, team building, and renewed connection to our shared mission.

Bridges to Work staff gathering in downtown Nashville for an All-Staff retreat

This summer, Bridges from School to Work brought staff from across the country together in Nashville, Tennessee, for an All-Staff Retreat centered on learning, connection, service, and our shared mission.

Professional development was a major focus throughout the week. Staff chose from breakout sessions covering topics directly connected to their work, including job development in a challenging labor market, supporting youth of color with disabilities, understanding IEPs and SSI benefits, technology, and social media.

The retreat also created space to think more broadly about how Bridges supports young adults with disabilities. Dr. Charmaine Conner led staff through a session on what it means to be a trauma-informed care organization, while David Caudel from Vanderbilt University's Frist Center for Autism and Innovation provided insight on how to cultivate a neuroinclusive culture.

An employer panel brought another important perspective into the conversation, giving staff an opportunity to hear directly about the needs of businesses and the role Bridges can play in connecting employers with talented young adults. The retreat concluded its formal programming with Kevin Fleming's keynote, "Words Are Your Superpower."

One of the most meaningful moments of the week took place away from presentations and breakout rooms.

During a dedicated service project, Bridges staff worked together to prepare more than 300 meals for students at a local elementary school. The activity was a powerful reminder that service is not limited to our individual markets or job titles. It is a value that connects our organization and our people.

Of course, an All-Staff Retreat also needs some fun.

From a Nashville scavenger hunt and line dancing to peer breakouts, shared meals, karaoke, portrait painting, astrology 101, yoga and plenty of informal conversations, staff had opportunities throughout the week to connect with colleagues they may normally know only through a screen.

Those relationships matter. Bridges operates across communities throughout the country, but our mission is shared: helping young adults with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and succeed in meaningful employment.

The Nashville retreat gave us an opportunity to invest in the people who make that mission possible—and return to our local communities with new ideas, stronger relationships, and renewed energy for the work ahead.
